Dresses For Twelve Year Olds
UAB develops a new digital archaeological documentation
A research team of the Center for Archaeological Heritage of Prehistory Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) has developed a new system of cataloging archaeological material which reduces the margin of error of 1 percent.
A statement from the university, this system replaces the traditional labeling pieces by hand by an identifying code on each piece applied directly using two-dimensional Datamatrix codes, which allow alphanumeric sequences include forming a series of up to 20 digits to accommodate the size of the piece.
This system is printed on polypropylene labels and codes are attached to the piece between two sheets of Polaroid B72, an acrylic resin widely used in the restoration of archaeological materials, which protects the label of the passage of time and adverse storage conditions.
code - with information on the site, the archaeological unit and the sequence number - can be read by standard readers, such as video and photo cameras and mobile phones.
This application presents significant advantages over the traditional system in terms of speed and reliability, and to adapt to the size of archaeological material - which is sometimes too small for hand-coded labels -.
addition, manual labeling is a routine process that requires a significant investment of time and work that is common errors - you have counted up to 40 percent - and that degrades over time making it difficult to read.
Doctors Rafael Mora, Paloma González and Jorge Martinez and two years have tested the system in the excavations Datamatrix African Olduvai George Mieso in Tanzania and Ethiopia and on the Lleida Roca dels Bous and Cova Gran.
In fact, researchers have encouraged other professional colleagues to use this system to standardize the documentation of archaeological records and promote the development of digital applications that allow data back intrenet consultation and openness of funds museum in cyberspace.
